My experience with the virus in Bulgaria

27/05/2020

Hi everyone,

Unfortunately, due to the coronavirus, our Erasmus stay had to be in our room. When we came back to Bulgaria from Vienna, we heard that we had to stay under quarantine for 2 weeks before going anywhere. To ensure that the population respected that, the Bulgarian government put sanctions and fines for people that did not respect them. The sanctions were big: if the police saw you outside of your apartment, they could give fines of up to 5000 lv (2500 euros) and up to 1 year of prison. So, during the quarantine, I ate fast food thanks to the home delivery app called Food Panda. We also heard that Bulgaria was closing some borders. But all was good, we were all in Veliko Tarnovo.

But during our quarantine, the measures against the virus were increased. The Bulgarian government had the good idea of giving people over 60 years old 2 hours in the morning for going in shops. It was a very good idea because they are the most vulnerable. Fines and sanctions were also increased : fines of up to 10000 lv (5000 euros) and 3 years of prison. They also prohibited trips between cities if they are not for medical of professional reasons.
